On a Van, the Body Is the Structure, and That Changes Everything
OCRV Center Service Desk
A van has no separate frame carrying a box. The painted steel skin, the ribs behind it and the rocker are the structure. Once corrosion perforates any of them, the section gets cut and replaced, because filler over a hole restores appearance and nothing else.
The difference from a coach
A motorhome body sits on a chassis. Damage the sidewall badly and the vehicle is still structurally a vehicle.
A van is a unibody. The panel doing the visual work is also the panel carrying load, so the repair standard is the structural one whether or not the damage looks structural.
Where the water gets in on a conversion
Aftermarket roof penetrations: fans, solar mounts, antennas. This is the largest single source.
Window cutouts, particularly where the opening was cut without reinforcing the surrounding panel.
The sliding door track, which collects debris and holds water against the rocker seam below it.
From there it runs down the inside face of the steel and collects at the rocker, which is exactly where it does the most damage and is hardest to see.
Surface corrosion against perforation
Surface corrosion is treatable, at $400 to $3,500 depending on extent. Cut back, treated, coated, done.
Perforation is not. Once it is through, treating it seals the appearance over a structural loss that keeps progressing underneath. The section gets cut out and a new one welded in.
A shop willing to quote filler over a perforated rocker is quoting something that will be discovered by the next buyer's inspection.
Why so much van work here is correction
A large share of the camper van work at this shop is fixing a previous build rather than repairing an accident.
The three recurring items are roof penetrations sealed with the wrong product, windows cut without reinforcement, and electrical specified below the load it actually carries. All three are fixable, and all three are cheaper to fix while a wall is already open.
Common questions
Can rust on a Sprinter rocker be treated instead of cut?
Surface corrosion yes, perforation no. Once it is through, treatment seals the appearance and leaves the structural loss in place to keep progressing.
Does a camper conversion make collision repair more expensive?
Yes, substantially. The build has to come out to reach the panel and go back in afterward, and cabinetry fitted to a wall that has to move is labor on both ends.
How do I tell if a used van has been filled rather than sectioned?
A magnet finds filler, and a close look at the rocker seam finds a section that was welded properly. A pre purchase inspection finds both, which is what it is for.

Bring it in
Insurance walk ins are welcome. The teardown hour is priced at $210 and credited against an authorized repair, so the evaluation is not a cost you lose if the work proceeds.
