It converts an estimate written from what is visible into a scope written from what is there. On a coach those are different documents, because most of the damage is behind a panel. The hour costs $210 and is credited against an authorized repair.
The adjuster is not guessing badly, they are guessing
An adjuster writes from what can be seen. That is the job, and on a car it is largely sufficient because a steel panel deforms visibly along the path the energy took.
A bonded laminate does not. The energy travels along the luan backer and releases the bond well past the point of contact, and none of that shows from outside.
What changes once panels are off
The released area becomes measurable rather than assumed.
Structure behind the skin becomes visible, which is where an impact that looked cosmetic turns out to have reached an outrigger.
Any pre existing moisture damage in the same area gets documented separately, which stops a carrier folding new damage into it.
All of it gets photographed, which is what a supplement is approved on.
Order of operations matters more than the hour does
Teardown before the adjuster inspects means the adjuster writes against an open structure.
Teardown after they have already written means every subsequent finding is a supplement argued against a number they have committed to. Same work, considerably harder claim.
The economics
One hour at $210, credited against an authorized repair. Proceed and it costs nothing.
Decline to repair and you keep a documented, photographed, measured scope you can take to a carrier or another shop. That is worth more than $210 on its own.
Common questions
Should teardown happen before or after the adjuster visits?
Before, wherever possible. It means the adjuster writes their estimate against exposed structure rather than against an intact panel, which removes most of the supplement traffic later.
Will insurance pay for the teardown?
It is generally recoverable as part of the repair scope on an authorized claim. On this rate card it is credited against the repair regardless, so the owner is not out of pocket for it either way.
What if teardown shows less damage than expected?
Then the scope is smaller and the number is lower, and you found that out for $210 rather than by authorizing a repair sized to a guess.
