Why a Delaminated Reefer Liner Gets Replaced, Not Patched

OCRV Center Service Desk

Insulation value does not come back once the core is wet. A patched reefer liner restores the surface and leaves a saturated panel behind it, which means the unit runs harder for the rest of its service life to hold the same box temperature.

The liner is not the insulation

The scuff liner is a wear surface. The insulation is the foam or balsa core behind it, and that is what the body is actually for.

When the liner delaminates, it is usually because water got past it and the core took on moisture. Fixing what you can see addresses the wear surface and not the reason it failed.

Wet core is permanent

Closed cell foam that has taken water does not dry out in service. Water displaces the air that was doing the insulating, and the R value it loses does not come back.

The unit compensates by running longer duty cycles. That is fuel, and it is compressor hours, every day, for the remaining life of the body.

Where it gets in

Roof bows, particularly on an older bonded body.

The front bulkhead joint.

Rear frame corners, which take the most abuse from dock impacts.

Any post repair penetration that was sealed rather than properly bonded.

The economics for a fleet

Liner replacement runs $1,000 to $18,000 depending on how many panels the moisture reached.

Against that sits a permanent efficiency loss on a unit that may have years left. On a body with service life remaining, replacement is usually the cheaper number even though it is the larger invoice.

Common questions

Can a small reefer liner delamination be spot repaired?

If the core behind it is genuinely dry, sometimes. That is worth confirming with a moisture reading rather than assuming, because a dry core is the exception once a liner has released.

How do I know if my reefer core is wet?

Duty cycle is the practical indicator. A unit running noticeably longer to hold the same set point, with no refrigeration fault, is usually telling you about the body rather than the machine.

Does a wet reefer core affect the load?

It affects your ability to hold temperature under load and in ambient heat, which is exactly when it matters most. The margin disappears before the average does.

Insurance walk ins are welcome. The teardown hour is priced at $210 and credited against an authorized repair, so the evaluation is not a cost you lose if the work proceeds.
