What Months on a Whittier Grade Do to a Coach

A coach parked on a grade for months carries uneven load through its leveling jacks and its slide mechanisms. The result shows up as a slide that no longer synchronizes and a frame that has taken a set, and neither is obvious until the coach is moved.
Grade is a structural load, not a parking detail
A motorhome is designed to be supported evenly. On a slope, weight redistributes toward the low corners and the chassis carries a twist it was not designed to hold for months at a time.
Slide rooms are the first thing to complain. A Schwintek or rack and pinion system set square at the factory is now operating in a frame that is no longer square, and the two sides stop arriving together.
The leveling system takes it too
Hydraulic jacks holding a correction for months bleed down unevenly, and the controller loses its reference to level.
Air suspension on a coach or trailer parked on a grade holds one side at the top of its travel indefinitely, which is not what a bag is designed to do.
Then there is the driveway itself
Steep driveway approaches in this part of Whittier are the most common source of rear cap and hitch scrape damage the shop sees from the city.
It happens on the way out, at the break over point, and on a long coach it happens before the driver has any indication of the clearance behind them.
What to actually do about it
Level the coach on blocks rather than relying on jacks to hold a correction across a storage season.
Cycle the slides periodically rather than leaving them retracted for months.
Have the leveling system and the slide synchronization checked before a first trip after long storage, rather than discovering it at a campsite.
Common questions
Is it bad to leave an RV on jacks for months?
It is not what the system is for. Jacks are a levelling device rather than a storage support, and holding a correction for a season bleeds down unevenly and costs the controller its reference.
Why does my slide bind after storage?
Most often because the coach sat out of square long enough that the two sides of the mechanism lost synchronization. It is adjustable, and it gets worse the longer it is operated in that state.
Does hillside storage affect the roof too?
Indirectly. A sloped coach sheds water toward one end, so debris and standing water concentrate rather than distributing, which shortens the seal interval at that end.
